Ulcerative Colitis is a major stomach problem, in which there is swelling and irritation in the large intestine, and there is a possibility of recurrence of this disease in recurrent patients. In common parlance, it is also called colitis or inflammation of the intestines. The types of colitis are decided on the basis of inflammation in different parts of the intestine, like if there is inflammation only in the lower part of the intestine, where the stool gets accumulated, then it is called Proctitis, on the other hand, if the inflammation is in the upper part, it is called Proctitis and it has also become part of that condition is called Distal Colitis. Similarly, if the inflammation is in more than half of the intestine then it is called Extensive Colitis and if there is inflammation in the entire large intestine then it is called Pancolitis. This disease is spread in all the countries of the world, especially in Europe, Australia and the US, about 77 people per one lakh people are suffering from this disease. Whereas in India this number is about 6 patients per 1 lakh people.
The main symptoms of ulcerative colitis are pain in the stomach or abdomen. Pinching sensation, frothy or cloudy stool and stomach upset which is includes torsion etc. Along with this, there is blood in the stool, loose stools/diarrhea, feeling of always going to defecate. Other symptoms of colitis include weight loss, fatigue, and intermittent high fever with subsequent recovery. Sometimes patients suffer from dehydration due to diarrhea and also have pain in eyes and knees. If this problem persists for a long time, it may lead to liver problems and anemia. Diet and irregular lifestyle also have an impact on colitis. Stimulant diets like junk food, hot chillies, spices, fried food and excessive consumption of alcohol can also increase the problem of colitis.
In allopathy, inflammation is treated on the basis of clinical symptoms and with various testing techniques like ultrasound, endoscopy etc. Allopathic medicines for this disease are mainly given in 4 stages. In the first stage, the victim is given Aminosalicylates in the form of a very common drug, Sulfasalazine. If for some reason the medicine does not work properly, steroids are given in the second stage, then immunomodulators are given in the third stage. If the patient does not get relief even after 3 stages, surgery is done, in which the part of the intestine in which there is swelling is cut and separated. But this is also not a permanent solution to this disease and there is a possibility of the disease returning again. Allopathic medicines given in colitis also have many side effects like headache, nausea, and in some cases, separation of bone marrow due to which the formation of new blood cells stops.
But its successful treatment is possible in Ayurveda. After research and research, Patanjali has created Collogrit Enteric Coated Tablet for colitis. This medicine is made from extracts of bael, kutaj, cumin, celery, fennel, rose and camphor leaves. Even in Ayurvedic texts, Bael and Kutaj have been called panacea for stomach. During phytochemical analysis, various compounds like gallic acid, rutin, ellagic acid etc. were also found in cologrit by the method of HPLC technique. This is the first medicine manufactured by Patanjali Research Foundation, in which Enteric Coating has been used. The mechanism of medicines is such that they first break down in our stomach and the metabolism process starts. After that it gets absorbed in the large intestine. Then after that through our blood to other parts of the body goes in parts. But when the problem is of the large intestine, then why not make such a medicine which does not open in the stomach but opens directly in the large intestine. For this, there is a method used as a pharmacological tool which is called Enteric Coating. In this, a cover is placed over the medicine, which dissolves only where it is needed. By doing this the medicine reaches where it is needed. Different parts of our digestive system have different pH. What is pH i.e. the ratio between acidity (acidity) or basicity (alkalinity) of a substance? Our pH in the mouth remains 7, in the stomach the pH remains 2 and in the large intestine the pH remains between 7 to 7.5. After this conclusion, an attempt was made to make an enteric coating which would not dissolve at PH 2 but would dissolve directly at PH 7. Methacrylic acid-ethylacrylate copolymer-coating helps the drug to dissolve only after pH 5.5, hence it was used in Cologrit. To confirm how suitable this coating is. Along with spit or saliva, stomach liquid and intestinal liquid were also generated inside the lab, which is called Simulated Fluid. After that, Cologrit tablets were placed inside these liquids and it was seen how long it takes for these tablets to dissolve. Apart from this, biological responses were also used to track how long our food stays in the mouth, stomach and intestines. It turns out that food it lasts for 10-15 seconds in the mouth, 2 hours in the stomach and about 2.5 hours in the intestines. Subsequently, after placing Cologrit in intestinal fluid, it was found that it takes about 45 minutes to dissolve in the intestines.
This is a great example of how modern technology can be integrated into Ayurveda. Ayurveda can be further advanced by making Ayurvedic medicines superior to modern methods. Additionally, it is possible to have more beneficial effects in improving human health. Cologrit combines the ancient knowledge of Ayurveda with the modern science of drug release technology. This is a successful result of the fact that integrated use of various medical methods ensures proper solution to any disease. Now it can be said that the medicine which was able to reach the affected organ through enema in allopathy, is now able to reach the intestines through the mouth, where problems are arising. Due to this, patient compliance is good and people can take it even sitting at home.
The biological response of Cologrit was then analyzed and cell biological experiments called in-vitro or cell line trials were conducted to see whether the components of Cologrit could reduce inflammation. Secondly, can the inflammation caused by some other reason which is damaging the intestinal cells also be cured? In the first finding, it was found that our body's inflammatory cells are called macrophages and which rotate inside our body. These are the first line of defense of our body, meaning these cells act first in any type of infection, Cologrit was helpful in controlling them also. In the second finding, work was done on intestinal cells. The structure of our intestines is shaped like fingers, which are called microvilli. Due to this their security area has increased considerably.

If there is inflammation in our intestines then the WBCs of our body called monocytes. To cure it, they stick to our intestines so that the infection there can be controlled. In this study, we generated intestinal cells in the lab and colored the WBCs with dye, and found that Cologrit also worked to heal those cells. This is the first research in Ayurvedic medicine in which work has been done on complex cells and chemotaxis markers. During any type of oxidative stress/infection, our cells send signals and WBCs start repairing them. The direction of these white blood cells is decided by the chemotaxis markers CXCL 5 present in our body. Even after research on chemotaxis markers, it was seen that Cologrit medicine is working successfully in this also. After all this research, it was concluded that Cologrit medicine reduces inflammation, controls the migration of cells and also normalizes the basic causes of inflammation.
