Based on the analysis of 31 years of data, researchers warn
Antibiotic resistance could cause 40 million deaths in 25 years
Antibiotic resistance may cause the death of about 40 million people worldwide in the next 25 years. In a study published in The Lancet Medical Journal, researchers have made this estimate after analyzing data for about 31 years between 1990 and 2021.
Antibiotic resistance occurs when a bacteria develops to avoid the effects of an antibiotic drug. When this happens, antibiotics become ineffective against bacteria. Researchers have made this estimate based on the medical records of more than 52 crore people of all age groups from 204 countries. In this study under the Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) project in the UK, researchers said that the resistance to antibiotics has increase resistance can cause the death of about 3.90 crore people by the year 2050. At the same time, this resistance can indirectly cause an additional 1.69 crore deaths. If corrective measures are not taken in time, then by 2050 the annual death rate can cross the figure of 82 lakhs respectively.
Moost danger in Asia and Africa
According to the researchers, direct and indirect deaths due to antibiotic resistance are projected to increase by 68% and 75% respectively by 2022. In South Asia, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, about 11.8 million people may die due to this by the year 2050. Deaths due to antibiotic resistance will also be high in other parts of Southern and Eastern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
Furthermore, trends between 1990 and 2021 show that deaths attributable to antibiotic resistance have increased by more than 80 per cent among people aged 70 years and older, and will continue to affect the elderly more in the future.
This is how you can save lives
According to the researchers, a large number of lives can be saved if prevention is focused on in time. Better care for serious infections, new vaccines to prevent infections, and access to more prudent medical protocols that limit antibiotic use to appropriate cases could save a total of 9.20 million lives between 2025 and 2050 the lives of crores of people can be saved.
