Where there’s acme of sadhna, there’s sadhana. If those, who has to reach ultimate home, will chant ‘ghar ghar’ while sitting idle under the tree, then he won’t attain it. In contrary, he will face obstacle in the forest. |
According to the Shrimadbhagwadgita, entire good works are known as yagya which includes agnihotra, donation, tap, hom, pilgrimage, veda study, entire physical, practical and economical activities. Entire service, study, teaching, etc are also called yagya. The work being done for providing happiness to others are the real duty which removes longingness. It also eradicates entire duty of karmyogi.
Nishkamta in yagya
There was tradition of karmakand at a time when the Gita was written. The Brahman scriptures advocate karmakand. It describes yagya and its rituals minutely. Karmakandi says that those who performs yagya with these processes get ultimate heaven. Performing yagya was based on fulfilment of desire. Shri Krishna said that entire behaviour of universe is based on nishkamta. The evidence is that yagya being performed in the name of sakamta can’t succeed without nishkamta. Ideology related to yagya of karkandi is that it’s deity who runs the entire universe. Fire, air, aaditya, etc are deities. The karmakandi offers havi to the deities by performing yagya. The deities also provide happiness, heaven, offspring, prosperity, etc to the karmakandi. Offering havi to the deities, yajman says-- ‘idam agnaye. Idanna mam’- this is for fire not for me. Similarly, ‘idanna mam’ is offered to every deity. Shrikrishnaji says that intention of ‘idam mam’ for the deities is nothing but ‘nishkarm-karm’. Getting rid of longing, ego, etc is called ‘nishkam-karm’. The yagya without intention of ‘idam mam’ can’t succeed. The karmakandi must offer karm to the deity. Therefore, Shrikrishna gave new meaning to traditional word ‘yagya’. He termed ‘nishkam karm’ as ‘yagya’.
Nishkam-karm and yagya
Those who brings ideological revolution puts new meaning in the old words. Although, common people are reluctant to lose archaic dictum, they put new meaning in the old words giving new message to the world. For example, in the present era, Shradheya Swami Jee Maharaj spread ‘yog’ and ‘sanyas’ to the common people. Shrikrishna did so. ‘Yagya’ word was used for sakam bhavna. He experimented this word for sakam-bhavna which means renunciation of self-interest, longing, desire, etc and living life for others. Shrikrishna also gave meaning of ‘yagya. The Gita said that intention of self-interest and nishkamta is laid in the seed of the universe. Apart from creating universe, the ultimate god also devised yagya, ‘sahayagyah prajah srishta purovacha prajapatih’. Highlighting intention of yagya means renunciation, he asked to run the universe in this way. The yajman is obliged to get rest of yagya in its performance. Therefore, offer entire duties in the feet of the ultimate god and accept whatever result it proves. Those who don’t offer their duties to the feet of the God, havi in the yagya created by the God and have desire of getting result are nothing but thief. The human being must consider every duty as yagya. They must accept yayga residue provided by the God. Therefore, by showing this nishkamta in the sakam yagya, Shrikrishna termed ‘nishkam-karm’ as ‘yagya’ and adjusted his ideology with ideology of that time.

The bhakta who consumes meal after completion of yagya gets rid of all types of sins. It means that the God’s bhakta gets rid of all types of sins and other who prepares meal for physical happiness remain grappled with sins. Therefore, providing parents, teachers, wife, husband, brother, sister, relatives, society and nation due respect and offering the residue to the God’s feet are called purnahuti- ‘sarvam vai purnam svaha’. In other words, leading life by keeping others’ rights and duties are nothing but the life filled with yagya.
