Psoriasis is a chronic and autoimmune disease, which affects about 25 million Indians. This disease affects the skin. It causes inflammation, redness on the skin, itching etc.
It is a chronic inflammatory, non-infectious skin disease in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing skin cells to grow too quickly. Parts of the skin become scaly and swollen, most often on the scalp, elbows or knees but other parts of the body can also be affected. Psoriasis skin disease can be localized or widespread. Scientists do not fully understand what causes psoriasis, but they know that a combination of genetics and environmental factors are involved.

Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease, which means your body's immune system becomes overactive and causes problems. If you have psoriasis, immune cells become activated and produce molecules that trigger the rapid production of skin cells. Symptoms of Psoriasis
The symptoms of psoriasis vary from person to person, but some common symptoms are as follows:-

Patches of thick, red skin with silvery-white scales that itch or burn, typically on the elbows, knees, scalp, torso, palms, and soles of the feet.

Dry, cracked skin that itches or bleeds.

Thick, ridged, pitted nails.

Poor quality of sleep.
Some patients have a related condition called psoriatic arthritis, which can be characterized by stiff, swollen or painful joints, neck or back pain, or heel pain. If you have symptoms of psoriatic arthritis, it's important to see a doctor as soon as possible because untreated psoriatic arthritis can cause irreversible damage.
Psoriasis symptoms tend to come and go. You may find that your symptoms get worse at times, called flares, followed by periods when you feel better.
Types of psoriasis
There are different types of psoriasis, which include:-
Plaque psoriasis – this is the most common type, and it appears as raised, red patches on the skin that are covered with silvery-white scales. These patches usually develop in a pattern on the body and appear on the scalp, torso and limbs, particularly the elbows and knees.
Guttate psoriasis — This type usually appears in children or young adults, and typically looks like small, red dots on the torso or limbs. Outbreaks often begin with an upper respiratory tract infection such as strep throat.
Pustular psoriasis – in this type, patches of red skin are surrounded by Pus-filled bumps called pustules appear. It usually affects the hands and feet but there is also a form that covers most of the body. Symptoms may be triggered by medications, infection, stress, or certain chemicals.
Inverse psoriasis - This form causes smooth, red patches in the skin folds. Appears in the form of marks under the breasts or in the groin or armpits. Rubbing and sweating can make it worse.
Erythrodermic psoriasis : It is a rare but common form of psoriasis severe form, in which red, scaly patches cover most of the body it can also cause severe sunburn or exposure to corticosteroids. It may be triggered by taking certain medicines such as erythrodermic Psoriasis often develops in people who have a different types of psoriasis, which are well controlled if this is not done, it can be very serious.
